Grenache - characteristics of the variety
Its origins are somewhat controversial; the Spanish region of Catalonia is vying for it along with Sardinia. However, wherever it comes from, it is one of the ten most cultivated grape varieties in the world. It definitely owes this to its resilience, as it thrives in arid California and Australia.
How it smells and tastes
When you are about to taste a glass of Grenache, expect candied fruit and cinnamon. The wines obtained from it are rich in alcohol content, full of good structure, with a pleasant aromatic intensity in tones of ripe red fruit and spices. The acid and tannin content is rather lower. The younger wines are fruity, with an earthy note and pinker hints of pepper. Instead, the more mature version is dominated by a fruity character dominated by dates and raisins, with Mediterranean tones of laurel, thyme and pepper.
What dishes do these wines serve with
Choose light young wines of a fruity nature if you wish to complement white and red meats and medium-ripe cheeses. If, on the other hand, you prefer more pronounced red meat dishes, even spicy flavors, then reach for a more mature wine. It will also be great with long-keeping cheeses.
