Marzemino with a more modest tannin content is a wonderful, lively wine that doesn't need long refinement. Its bouquet based on red fruits, plums and dried flowers is in perfect harmony with mild acidity. It is not a wine that you would leave in the archives for years, but it does not detract from its quality!
Marzemino - about the vine variety
Marzemino is widespread mainly in Veneto, in Trentino-Alto Adige, but also in Emilia-Romagna. Originally from Asia Minor, we believe that it was brought to Italy by the soldiers of the Venetian Republic around 1600. Depending on the production area, it gives wines different characteristics. We can find both its quiet and sparkling versions, wines red, rosé, dry, sweet and dessert. It is the same with his vinification. In addition to its pure form, we usually encounter its combination with Groppello, Sangiovese, Barbera or Cabernet Sauvignon.
Who will like it?
These wines generally have an intense aromatic profile. It is dominated by fruit tones of blackberries and cherries. If you choose the so-called passito, you will be enchanted by the scent of strawberry and cherry jam on a slightly ethereal background. They are characterized by their warmth and softness, accompanied by a barely noticeable tannin structure. This is true if it is vinified itself. However, due to the fact that it often occurs in mixtures, it is necessary to take into account the taste characteristics of these other grapes.
Combining with food
Just as Marzemino can have many faces, it also offers a wide variety of dishes to which it can be served. Dry still wines are ideal for cold cuts, starters with sauces and grilled red meat. You won't spoil anything if you serve them with vegetable dishes, risotto or pasta. Sweeter and sparkling perfectly accompany fruit cakes and pastries at best with red fruit jams. With a passit for a change, it creates an interesting combination of tea cakes and ripe cheeses.
