The roots of this variety would probably be found in Burgundy, France, where it originated from a bud mutation of Pinot Gris grapes. Traditionally, however, it is associated more with Alsace, where it was further bred and where mentions from the 14th century have been preserved. It has become increasingly popular in other countries; today it is also widely represented in Italian, German or Austrian vineyards. Pinot Noir is also suitable for archiving as a raw material in the production of sparkling wines.
