Syrah (Shiraz) - Origin and specifics of the vine

The origin of this type of grape is shrouded in mystery. It could be in faraway Persia, as well as in Albania or Trentino-Alto Adige in Italy. What is certain, however, is that today it is grown mainly in France in the Rhone Valley, Tuscany and Sicily. Its cultivation brings with it certain complications, it is relatively sensitive to climatic conditions, however, modern cultivation techniques and the availability of quality clones can eliminate these risks.

Olfactory and taste sensations

The aroma is so complex that it can be identified even if Syrah is present in a mixture with other grapes. This for the typical spicy aromas of black pepper, but also fruit tones such as plum, black cherry, currant, blueberry and blackberry. In some cases, it is also possible to smell a delicate violet scent. It has excellent preconditions for maturation, which gives it an interesting tertiary aroma of vanilla, licorice, tobacco and chocolate. It is characterized by a very good structure, strong persistence and attractive softness on the tongue and palate.

Pairing wine with food

Syrah is endowed with great versatility, depending on its origin and sophistication, it can be harmonized with a very wide range of dishes. It is generally recommended to accompany strong and spicy flavors. Great with grilled or stewed red meat, lamb and game. It is also suitable for ripened cheeses and those flavored with black pepper or saffron.
